About The AOA
The Australian Osteopathy Association (AOA) is the peak body representing the interests of osteopaths and their patient’s right to access osteopathic services. The AOA is a national organisation with state and territory based councils.
Originally founded in 1955 in Victoria, the Association became a federal body in 1991 and today represents Osteopaths in all states and territories across Australia. The AOA is a member of the Osteopathic International Alliance.
The AOA corporate structure is one of a company limited by guarantee. The organisation has approximately 1500 members. The AOA is governed by a Board of Directors; state or territory Presidents are elected by members in each state or territory and the National President is elected by all members at the AGM.
Our core work is liaising with state and federal government, all other statutory bodies regarding professional, educational, legislative and regulatory issues as well as private enterprise. Our role is also to increase awareness of osteopathy and what osteopaths’ do.
AOA members are committed to the concept of continuing professional education and the AOA requires all members to comply with our standards. The AOA signifies a standard of professional and ethical behaviour over and above the requirements of registration.
The AOA has developed a strategic plan to steer its direction over the next few years. The plan is strongly focused on providing opportunities for members through professional excellence and career success.
Most people, regardless of age or gender, will suffer from back or neck pain, headaches, sport injuries, stiffness or pain at some time. Osteopaths can help to identify the cause of the pain or injury and develop a safe and effective course of action to manage pain – so people can make the most of their active lives.
Osteopathy is not an alternative health option – osteopaths are university trained, government registered, allied health professionals.
Osteopaths collectively treat over 30 000 people a week, generate over $200 million in the economy, plus osteopathy has been practiced for over 100 years in Australia.
